Down the Shore

Vol. 9 - Week of November 2nd

After the festive buzz of Halloween night passed and we were left staring at the inordinate amount of candy we overbought this year, we spent a blustery Saturday in downtown Red Bank:

First we paid a visit to The Mercantile (25 Bridge Avenue), a beautiful home goods store and design studio that was already decked out quite festively for Christmas.

Then we headed over to the newly opened Anderson Market, which we’ll give a more in-depth overview of in just a bit. We’ll definitely be paying repeat visits to both as we get farther into the holiday shopping season.

🔦 New Business Spotlight: Anderson Market

The History: According to their website, the building on the corner of Monmouth Street and Bridge Avenue was built by Franklin Pierce Stryker, a man known for the “finest horse and carriage rentals.” The original stable burned down (but don’t worry, all horses were saved), and it later housed carriages and classic cars. These days it still sits near a transportation hub — the Red Bank station of NJ Transit is within spitting distance, making it a great place to grab a snack or coffee before boarding your train.

What’s there now:

  • Booskerdoo - Grab a seasonal maple pecan scone + pumpkin caramel latte

  • Nick + Sons - For a more savory pastry, we’re huge fans of their za’atar cheddar croissant

  • Namkeen – “Chicken with Pakistani soul”  for lunch. Try a Nashville Sandwich (we chickened out and still sweat through a “mild”) paired with Masala Fries

  • Molly Boards: Grab a Date Night charcuterie box for home (or one of their gourmet grilled cheese creations)

  • Events: We’ve got the Fleur de Mer holiday wreath workshops marked on our calendar (11/30, 12/3, 12/7)

Family Friendly note: the market is easy to push a stroller around, food can be made to eat there or to-go, and it was not terribly crowded on a Saturday with ample table space, making it a nice place to spend lunch indoors with the kiddos when the weather is colder or rainy (like it might be this upcoming weekend).

🗓️ Important Dates This Week:

👋 Helping Hand

Starting this month and through the end of the year, we’ll be spotlighting a different local nonprofit. This week: donate or volunteer at the Food Bank of Monmouth & Ocean Counties. And if there’s a nonprofit you’d like us to feature in an upcoming newsletter, please reach out!

Shout out to the Rumson and Fair Haven communities for completing the 100-Yard Food Drive Challenge, filling the RFH Regional High School football field end-zone to end-zone with donated bags of food.
