Down the Shore
Vol. 10 - Week of November 9th
We’ve seen swift swaps of skeletons for reindeer in front yards this week. But before we break out the twinkle lights, Saturday’s temps had us ordering iced coffees at the farmers market. And Sunday’s misty rain had us discovering a great indoor activity to do at the Shore in the off season. Read more in the field trip section below!
🐠 Field Trip: A Rainy Day in Point Pleasant Beach
We know, we know. It’s technically Ocean County. And while Point Pleasant Beach typically comes to mind on sunny summer days, it actually has a lot to offer on a rainy fall one. Here’s our perfect itinerary just one town south over the Monmouth County line.
Lunch: Point Lobster Co. - Grab a New England Chowder to start, and share a plate of the Tuna Nachos with a friend. Their wonton “chips” are the perfect crispy companion to the melt-in-your-mouth ahi tuna and seaweed toppings. They also have highchairs, crayons, and a kids menu.
Activity: Jenkinson’s Aquarium - It’s not all fishy…you’ll be surprised at how many different animals call this aquarium home! While the tanks of sharks, stingrays, and spotted eels dazzle, you can also catch a live seal feeding show, hear a cockatoo cry, and see the cutest little marmosets. We also learned that all penguins live south of the equator, and most in warmer climates like South Africa. So those Coca Cola Christmas commercials steered us all wrong!
😋 Foodie Fun

🍎 Made in Monmouth
If you see these apple cider caramels by @kmwkitchen being sold anywhere, run don’t walk. We snagged ours at the last Fair Haven Farmers Market of the year (see you again in May!) The Fair Haven-based owner Kathleen Walsh told us how she boils gallons of apple cider for multiple hours to make these, and the tangy mix of cider with the salty sweet caramel results in the most delightful of fall treats. Word is she also makes apple cider snickerdoodle too.
☕🍪 Gym, Tan, Cold Brew
We’ve got ourselves a situation on our hands - Rook Coffee has joined forces with J. Shore’s very own Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino to bring us New Orleans-style Bang Cookies, which made their appearance at Rook locations over the weekend. The Sitch, who is co-owner of NJ-based Bang Cookies, even served up a few orders himself.

This week’s spotlight is on The Center in Asbury Park. Since 1992, The Center has been a volunteer-based non profit, providing support services for people living with HIV/AIDS. They follow a housing-first model to connect at-risk, status-neutral community members to comprehensive healthcare, safe and supportive housing, and wellness. World AIDS Day is coming up on 12/1 - check out their events page to get involved.
